Twas Now marks a stop on a journey of discovery that Phil Irish is taking in his paintings. Irish installs a "cartographers' lounge" in diverse venues, such as hotel rooms, outside of churches, nightclubs, and public art galleries, where he asks members of the public to draw a personal map of a place that is important to them. After viewing this document, Irish proceeds to follow the directions of the maps, discovering the personal journeys originally experienced by their authors. He applies his own interpretation to the map and creates a painting based on his journey. The large-size oil paintings offer intriguing observations made by the artist about the significance of location and memory.
