Scott Sawtell | Right Before Your Eyes
Tuesday, September 7, 2021 to Saturday, October 23, 2021
Regional artist Scott Sawtell channels the curiosity and imagination from his youth and takes inspiration from comics, music, and animation to inform his abstracted environments and figures. There is a purposeful tension between realistic and familial imagery with obvious abstract and gestural mark making. Sawtell’s self-reflection during the pandemic has informed and strengthened his practice exploring the creative chaos of living in a tenuous time, sharing images that engage the viewer’s experience and provoking an uncanny feeling.
Jeff Thomas | The Indigenous Map Maker’s Room
Saturday October 30, 2021 to Sunday January 2, 2022
Jeff Thomas is a nationally recognized photo-based artist, writer, and curator, artwork featured in major art collections in Canada and the United States. In his work, he examines historical and contemporary views of Indigeneity and addresses the impact of issues such as urbanization, land ownership and historical ways of representation. The exhibition The Indigenous Map Maker’s Room, shows work from his larger series, Indians on Tour, which features toy figurines posed in front of national monuments and landscapes. In his photographs, Thomas reframes the stereotypical representation of the figures, presenting them as tourists in a contemporary environment, challenging preconceptions of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous history.
