Friday, January 19 – Saturday, March 16, 2024 Latcham Art Centre – 2 Park Dr. In Night Visions, Montreal-based artist Mathieu Larone presents drawings that transport viewers to familiar spaces made strange. Set alongside collaboratively-made music videos, Larone’s narratives and recurring motifs invite us to take in mysterious stories, while blurring the line between illustrative work and fine art.
Monday, May 8 – Monday, July 31, 2023 Town Office Gallery – 111 Sandiford Dr. Yi Mei is a Richmond Hill artist whose work flows from realism into abstraction. Her landscapes and still life paintings often incorporate natural elements—like dried plants from her backyard and moss from nearby ponds—into the surface of the work to make distinctive textures. Her scenes take inspiration from her surroundings and community. The Town Office Gallery is programmed by Latcham Art Centre in collaboration with the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville. Wednesday, November 1, 2023 – Wednesday, January 31, 2024 Town Office Gallery – 111 Sandiford Dr. While traveling through Ontario from Niagara to north of Lake Superior, Markham-based artist Judith Livingston has witnessed dramatic changes to the environment. For this exhibition, the artist presents an ongoing series of paintings that are overlaid with sewing patterns and intricate linework, that reference the ways people reform the land. Students work with the Latcham curator throughout the fall semester to learn about the curatorial process, plan the exhibition, create related marketing materials, install the art, and organize the opening reception, providing an opportunity for these student artists to engage with a professional gallery in their community. Friday, October 20 – Wednesday December 7, 2023 Latcham Art Centre – 2 Park Drive, Stouffville Max Lupo and José Andrés Mora explore the power and playfulness of words using technology. Mora’s videos and prints open up conversations about memory, cultural hybridity, and assimilation while highlighting the intimacy of language. Lupo reprograms obsolete devices, like typewriters and rotary phones, to reveal personal stories and machine-made wisdom. Taken together, the works in Continuous Memory ask us to consider what is required to give meaning to language, and how that meaning can change as our relationships to words shift. Tuesday, August 1 – Tuesday, October 31, 2023 Town Office Gallery – 111 Sandiford Stouffville-based photographer Sean Stone presents a collection of photographs from his travels throughout Canada, capturing images of the land and wildlife in different seasons. With an eye for lighting, honed by past careers teaching theatre and lighting design, Stone’s documentary-style photographs show coast-to-coast views of Canadian natural wonders.
Friday, August 25 – Sunday, October 15, 2023 Latcham Art Centre – 2 Park Dr. Vanessa Dion Fletcher is a Lenape and Potawatomi neurodiverse artist; her family is from Eelūnaapèewii Lahkèewiitt (displaced from Lenapehoking) and European settlers. Relative Gradient includes recent works that expand the possibilities of contemporary quillwork. She transforms this surface embroidery technique into textile design and vinyl imagery, playing with geometric shapes and repeating patterns. For What we tend, the artist depicts gardens as carefully considered and intricate sanctuaries. His paintings and etchings embody a collage-like sensibility, drawing from various sources to create new yet convincing garden settings.
