In this artist talk, Anthony Gebrehiwot and curator Jeffrey Nye discuss the origins and concepts embedded within the exhibition "Beyond the Veil of Time: Bridging Black Temporalities".
Anthony Gebrehiwot’s work challenges our assumptions about temporality, questioning how language, culture, and science have bound human experience to the ticking clock. Drawing on quantum theories and the writing of Rasheedah Phillips, which reveal phenomena beyond the arrow of past - present - future, and African and Afrodiasporic understandings of time as a layered and communal spiral, Gebrehiwot proposes alternative models of existence. His photographs and digital collages bridge futuristic imagery with historical African aesthetics to envision a reality beyond colonial structures of time and identity.
