Overview

Year Acquired: 2012

Materials: Steel

Location: South of Main St. East of Market St.

About:

Fractal is made of Corten steel, also known as weathering steel – a type of alloy designed to form a rust-like appearance when exposed to the weather, creating a protective layer over time.

The steel within this piece was laser-cut before being folded and welded into its complex form. Its shape is comprised of four inverted triangular forms, which contain even smaller geometric shapes.

Fractals are geometric shapes or patterns that have the same basic structure or shape, no matter how much you magnify or shrink them. They can be found within nature; from the branching of trees to the shapes of clouds and mountains.

Baird’s Fractal reflects the structure of its surroundings. It mimics nearby clusters of trees, the cut outs have a stylized shape of flowers, and the stilt-like structure mirrors a surrounding building.
