Ted Bieler

Overview

Year Acquired: 1983

Materials: Cast aluminum and concrete

Location: South of Main St. East of Market St.

About:

Ted Bieler’s practice includes working with traditionally structured materials like stainless steel and wood to manipulate them into more naturalistic forms. His public sculptures are grand in scale, frequently ornate, and embody enigmatically kinetic shapes.

Bieler often utilizes motifs of columns and towers in his sculptures. Untitled features two columns of roughly cast aluminum growing out of two concrete bases, as if a lost monument is slowly being unearthed by the eroding soil around it. These strong, abstract pillars point toward the sky alluding to ancient columns, the Tower of Babel and bolts of lightning.
