Through their sculpture, drawing and painting, Toronto-based artists Jaime Angelopoulos and Derrick Piens invite the audience into a world that is simultaneously familiar and yet strange. They play with form and gesture in ways that reference the human body, evoke emotion and create imagined environments to be explored and experienced. The exhibition title, Anthropocene speaks to the proposed term for the period of time when significant human impact on the Earth’s geology and ecosystems has been greater than ever before. The Anthropocene age provides an interesting context to approach these respective works by Angelopoulos and Piens, thinking about the human element that manifests itself through the gestural and figural components in their practices.
