Overview

In Facing Material, Meera Sethi asks us to consider what it means to make contact with material as a carrier of history, memory, place, grief, and resilience.

Across a range of media, Sethi’s methodology of deep investigation into cloth takes us from playful surface ornamentation into interrogations that reveal themes of connection, labour, craft, and community.

The exhibition includes soft sculpture installation, paintings, drawings, and the artist’s most recent tape-based Draweaves. Immersing viewers in an intricately constructed and richly patterned world, Sethi’s work reframes textile as a mode and metaphor of communication, focusing our attention toward interlaced narratives.

Meera Sethi is a Toronto-based artist with a process-oriented, interdisciplinary, and research-based practice that moves between painting, drawing, sculpture, illustration, performance, and social practice. Her work sits at the intersection of the body and cloth, with a particular focus on South Asia and its diasporas. She references histories of gender, labour, environment, and colonization.
