Doherty’s paintings focus on what happens when the natural landscape becomes a constructed landscape. As natural elements are removed from the ground and displayed in containers and planters, or on rooftops and green walls, nature becomes one step removed from the ground and represents a disconnect from its source. Working in the painting style of the Dutch Renaissance masters, Doherty’s landscapes at first appear so life-like it’s hard to comprehend that you are looking at a two-dimensional surface.  However, as your eye continues to explore the image, her choice of perspective, scale and composition challenge our perceptions of landscape painting and encourage us to see the façade and artifice at play when the landscape and environment is altered.
