The Latcham Gallery is very excited to present THE WELL, an installation of sculpture, static and moving images, found materials and sound. Matt Walker’s practice is driven by a desire to use art as a form of inquiry both materially and conceptually. Within THE WELL he constructs overlapping narratives that invite us to consider our relationships to the planet both in temporal and spatial terms. Matt's practice deals with the exploration of materials, geography and gravity. His recent works with symbolic objects and poetic action make metaphorical connections to landscape and generate discourse on our relationship to place.
Experiential and immersive, THE WELL is a meditation on the stories we tell ourselves in relationship to the land and its uses. It asks us to consider our place, our roles and our responsibilities in relationship to the planet on which we depend.
Matt Walker lives and works in Hamilton, Ontario. He completed his MFA at the University of Calgary before spending the following 8 years working and studying at The Banff Centre (Banff, Alberta). His work deals with the exploration of materials and the interaction of objects and space. It reflects an interest in landscape and the models we use for mapping and understanding place. Walker has shown nationally and internationally and has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and The Alberta Foundation for the Arts. He has completed residencies at Plug-in ICA (Winnipeg), Artfarm (Nebraska), and The Centre for Innovation in Culture and the Arts in Canada (Kamloops).
THE WELL is part of the Latcham Gallery’s NEXT series generously sponsored by Valley Environmental Services Inc.
